The One Thing Most Homeowners Forget: Changing Your HVAC Filter Your furnace and air conditioning system has a filter that catches dust, pet hair, pollen, and all the other stuff floating around your house. When that filter gets clogged, your system has to work harder to push air through it. That means higher energy bills, more wear on your equipment, and worse air quality for your family. The fix is about as easy as it gets. Pull the old filter out, check the size printed on the frame, and grab a replacement at any hardware store. Slide the new one in with the airflow arrow pointing toward the unit. The whole job takes under two minutes and costs between $5 and $15 depending on the filter you choose. How often should you change it? For standard one-inch filters, every one to three months is the general rule. If you have pets, allergies, or run your system heavily, lean toward the monthly end. Thicker four- or five-inch media filters can sometimes go six months, but check the manufacturer's recommendation. Here's a simple trick: set a reminder on your phone for the first of every other month. When it pops up, check the filter. Hold it up to the light — if you can't see through it, it's done. Some homeowners write the install date on the edge of the filter with a marker so there's never any guessing. A clean filter extends the life of your HVAC system, keeps your energy costs down, and makes the air in your home noticeably better. It's a two-minute task that saves real money over time, and it's one of the first things we check whenever we're working in a client's home. — The iSpec LLC Team
