4 Tools Every Homeowner Should Own Whether you just closed on your first place or you've been in your home for years, having the right tools on hand can save you time, money, and a whole lot of frustration. As contractors, we see firsthand how a few basic tools can mean the difference between a quick weekend fix and an expensive service call. Here are four we think every homeowner needs in their toolbox. 1. A Quality Cordless Drill This is the MVP of any home toolbox. From hanging shelves and assembling furniture to tightening loose cabinet hardware, a cordless drill handles it all. Look for one with variable speed settings and at least an 18-volt battery. Spend a little extra on a decent brand and it'll last you a decade. Trust us, once you have one, you'll wonder how you ever got by without it. 2. A Reliable Tape Measure (25-foot) It sounds simple, but a good tape measure is something you'll reach for constantly. Measuring for new furniture, checking window dimensions for blinds, planning where to hang that TV — it all starts with accurate measurements. Go with a 25-foot tape that has a sturdy lock and a wide blade so it doesn't fold on you when you extend it. Keep one in the kitchen junk drawer and one in the garage. 3. A Stud Finder Trying to hang anything heavy on drywall alone is asking for trouble. A basic stud finder takes the guesswork out of finding the solid framing behind your walls, which means your mounted TVs, heavy mirrors, and floating shelves actually stay where you put them. Modern ones are affordable and easy to use — just run it along the wall and it beeps when it hits a stud. 4. An Adjustable Wrench Leaky faucet? Loose toilet bolt? A 10-inch adjustable wrench handles most basic plumbing tightening jobs around the house without needing a full wrench set. It's one of those tools that sits in a drawer for months, then saves you a $150 service call on a Sunday morning. The Bottom Line You don't need a contractor's full tool collection to take care of your home. Start with these four and you'll be ready for most of the small repairs and projects that come your way. And when the job gets bigger than the toolbox? That's what we're here for. — The iSpec LLC Team
