Upper Arlington
Permits, inspections & jurisdiction notes
Upper Arlington runs its Building Division within the Community Development Department at 3600 Tremont Road. Residential building permits take 7 to 10 business days for review; residential trade permits take 5 to 10 business days.
The wrinkle in Upper Arlington is plumbing. Plumbing inspections are not handled by the city — they are scheduled through Franklin County Public Health. A project here can involve two separate offices for one job: the city for building, HVAC, and electrical, and Franklin County for plumbing. Both have to sign off independently before the project closes out. We coordinate both sides.
Upper Arlington also has the Old Arlington Historic District south of Lane Avenue, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, plus a 35-foot height limit on single-family homes (28 feet in the River Ridge Addition area). Interior projects generally are not affected by historic review, but additions and exterior work routinely are.
Other jurisdictions
Permit requirements, fees, and procedures change. The information on this page reflects published requirements from each jurisdiction as of early 2026. Specifics on any individual project should be confirmed at the time of contract.
